An operation coordinated by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) and launched this Thursday (19) aims to: Combating sexual crimes and hate crimes against children and adolescents on the internet. The actions were carried out jointly with state civil police in eight states and the Federal District.
In total, 11 home search and seizure warrants, one arrest warrant for a juvenile offender, and three arrest warrants were executed. The officers were based in cities such as Brasília (DF), São Paulo (SP), Belo Horizonte (MG), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Curitiba (PR) and Ruy Barbosa (BA).
The objectives of “Operation Banhammer” are as follows: Groups that use platforms like Discord to encourage self-harm and suicide among minorsin addition to other self-destructive practices. Those involved also forced the teens to share intimate images through virtual enslavement schemes.
Additionally, according to MJSP, the investigation also found that there were plans to attack schools. The devices, including 9 computers and 17 mobile phones seized during the operation, will be subjected to forensic examination to determine the identities of those involved in the incident.
Crimes investigated
People suspected of belonging to groups that promote self-harm practices on Discord and other apps will face charges such as encouraging, inciting or aiding suicide or self-harm, and condoning a crime or combination of crime and crime. They can also be accused of raping a defenseless person online.
Among those detained is a 15-year-old teenager who was caught due to sexual abuse content. He was detained by police teams participating in the action in the Federal District. An 18-year-old youth was also arrested in Guarapuava (PR).
The name of the operation comes from the combination of the words “ban” and “hammer” (hammer in free translation), meaning to ban or exclude. The term is associated with the idea of banning online games, servers and communication applications, symbolizing a decisive action, as MJSP explains.
