The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said the new measures will fall into three categories: improving the approach to reducing the risk of pathogen contamination, improving inspectors’ tools and training, and tightening oversight.
The measures taken will be based on “scientific advances and best practices”. As Quartz reported, several product lines have been recalled throughout 2024 in connection with Listeriosis outbreaks in the United States. An outbreak involving Virginia-based processed meat producer Boar’s Head resulted in 10 deaths.
FSIS changes include testing for additional Listeria strains, updating guidelines and training for inspectors, and updating the high-risk facility identification algorithm. According to the source, the situation is quite serious.
