Honda and Nissan signed a memorandum of understanding that provides for the creation of a unified company structure.

At the stage of approval of the transaction, the combined company will be headed by Honda. The signing of the definitive merger agreement is expected in June 2025, and the process could move to August 2026.

Mitsubishi Motors is also considering the possibility of joining a single company. The management of Mitsubishi Motors promised to give a final answer by the end of January 2025. A key role in this process is played by Nissan, which is a major shareholder of Mitsubishi Motors with a 34% stake.

If the three manufacturers merge, the new company will be valued at approximately $50 billion. In terms of sales, it ranks third in the world after Toyota and Volkswagen.

Engineers from the three companies plan to jointly develop technologies for electric vehicles. The merger would also be a major boost for Nissan, whose operating profit fell 90% at the start of 2024 due to slowing sales. This resulted in the recruitment of 9,000 employees. [The Verge]
