This strategic decision stems from the desire to avoid internal competition between models.
The company plans to present both graphics cards at CES 2025, but the RTX 5080 will go on sale in mid-January, while the RTX 5090 will go on sale just a few weeks later, in late January or early February.
The RTX 5080 has 16 GB GDDR7 memory with up to 32 Gbps bandwidth and is aimed at the high-end segment.
In general, this move is understandable: while the RTX 4090, released before the latest RTX 4080, was widely praised for its massive performance increase, the RTX 4080 failed to offer an equally favorable price-to-features ratio.
NVIDIA is probably worried that the RTX 5090 will again overshadow the lower-end model if both become available at the same time.
