In terms of the number of new companies, Moscow took third place among the world’s megacities, sharing it with Boston, where 5.5 thousand young companies operate. There are more startups only in London (11.8 thousand) and New York (15 thousand).
More than 40% of Moscow startups are engaged in the development of computer software, another 20% carry out research and development in the fields of technical and natural sciences. On average, a Moscow startup employs 17 people.
The total revenue of these companies in 2023 amounted to 684.6 billion rubles. At the same time, more than half of the revenue came from 2% of the total number of startups. “These are, in particular, those companies that imported substitute foreign solutions, for example, commercial software developers and industrial developments, or found themselves in an advantageous position due to sanctions, for example, transport and logistics companies,” they indicated. the authors of the report. .
According to them, 24% of the total income was obtained by startups that develop software for companies, 14% from companies in the IndustrialTech sector, 10% from logistics and transportation startups, another 9% from fintech companies, 7% each one to telecommunications and marketing. startups, 6% each: energy companies and startups specialized in cybersecurity. EdTech startups earned 5% of the total revenue.
Cybersecurity turned out to be one of the most profitable areas in terms of the number of companies and their revenue. Each of the 123 companies in this profile earned an average of 71 million rubles last year.
