The fact is that as the animal ages, its body weight increases and the amount of elastic skin in the nape area decreases. Additionally, adult pets perceive being held by the neck as aggression. This is especially true for cats.

What else can happen if you grab a cat or dog by the scruff of the neck:

  • muscle and ligament injury: In an adult animal, muscle strain or tear may occur in the neck area;
  • spinal cord injury: important nerve endings are located in the cervical region of pets;
  • Respiratory disorder: When the skin on the animal’s neck is stretched, the animal’s airways are compressed;

fear: grasping the neck is perceived as a threat by a dog or cat;

  • broken trust: If you constantly hold your pet by the neck, it will stop trusting you;
  • aggression: the animal may begin to show aggression towards humans.
