99% of our tears consist of water and 1% consists of various inorganic substances. These substances are what give them their salty taste.

The main component of tears is sodium chloride (salt). They also contain potassium, calcium, magnesium, proteins, lysozyme.

There are three main types of tears. Each of them performs certain functions. Basal tears are secreted to protect the cornea from irritants and small particles and to moisturize the eyes.

Reflex tears occur when we are exposed to dust, smoke, harsh light and the smell of onions (when cutting).

Emotional tears occur when we experience strong emotions. Pain, anger, sadness, joy.

The sodium chloride in salt maintains fluid balance in the body and prevents dehydration. Calcium and magnesium help strengthen the protective properties of the tear film.
