The project uses advanced artificial intelligence models, such as the Brent Seals method, which reconstructs text from high-resolution tomograms. In 2023, this method led to the discovery of a Greek philosophical text whose author was probably Philodemus. AI models, including Oxford’s Ithaca, also reconstruct and date ancient Greek texts and are being used around the world to translate and decipher other ancient writings.
Despite the capabilities of AI, collaboration with historians and linguists is still necessary to achieve accuracy. The ultimate goal is a complete reading of the Herculaneum scrolls, which could lead to the discovery of the largest collection of ancient texts, the study authors write.
