In the preliminary agreement, the technology company denies having acted wrongly, recalls the BBC. Apple’s lawyers also say the company can confirm that it has “permanently deleted individual Siri audio recordings collected by Apple before October 2019.”

But the plaintiffs allege that the technology company recorded people who inadvertently activated the virtual assistant without consent. For example, plaintiff Fumiko López and her daughter are confident that Air Jordan ads began appearing on their devices precisely after they talked about the product.

As part of the settlement in the class action, which will finally be decided on February 14, the corporation will pay each plaintiff up to $20 for each Siri-compatible device they owned between 2014 and 2019.

By agreeing to the settlement, Apple not only remains free to publicly deny wrongdoing, but also avoids the risk of a lawsuit that could result in much larger payouts.

Apple has been involved in several class action lawsuits in recent years. In January 2024, it began paying compensation in a $500 million lawsuit alleging it intentionally slowed down iPhones in the United States. In March, it also agreed to pay $490 million in a class-action lawsuit brought by Norfolk County Council in the United Kingdom.
