Editors criticized Elsevier’s reliance on artificial intelligence in the editing process. They reported that errors resulting from AI reformatting drafts often changed their meaning and created significant delays. The authors were not informed about the use of artificial intelligence that violated “transparency standards.”
Additionally, Elsevier’s high publishing fees were described as “exceptional”. Restructuring plans to reduce the editorial staff and move to a different model were seen as undermining editorial independence. The final straw was Elsevier’s demand that the management of the two editors accept a 50 percent pay cut.
JHE member John Hawkes supported the resignation, stressing that artificial intelligence should not replace human expertise in scientific publishing.
Elsevier did not comment on the resignation.
