OpenAI started as a non-profit organization but has since moved to a commercial model with significant support from Microsoft, which has donated more than $13 billion to it. Musk claims the partnership resulted in unfair “influence”; Microsoft executives served on OpenAI’s board of directors. OpenAI said this claim is no longer valid because these executives are no longer on the board.
