On Meta (banned in Russia and recognized as extremist) filed a lawsuit in 2023 because the company trained its LLM model Llama on pirated content from torrent trackers.
Until recently, the company handed over redacted documents to the court, but now the judge must share the originals. In one conversation, an engineer says that “using a torrent from a budget laptop doesn’t seem like it,” confirming that the company was using pirated content to train its artificial intelligence. Another conversation suggests that “MZ” (Mark Zuckeberg) has authorized the use of pirated materials.
The meta used content from LibGen, the National Library of Pirated Books, Magazines and Scientific Articles created in 2008. Data from other libraries was also used.
The company claims that it used publicly available materials under the fair use doctrine, which allows protected copyrights to be used without permission under certain circumstances. [9to5]
