The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will determine whether Google should be given “strategic market importance” status in online search and advertising. This status means special attention by regulators and additional obligations to comply with antitrust laws.
The new rules, which came into force in January, significantly expand the CMA’s powers. The agency can now request more detailed information from companies, impose large fines if rules are broken, and introduce measures to increase competition.
