It’s about how to play Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition: a set of rules that opened up the wonderful world of tabletop RPGs for me and my friends. Here I would like to share my personal experience and features of desktop RPGs. To start playing you do not need a powerful video card or current consoles, the only thing you need is to have a set of dice (Dice), a grid sheet, a pencil and an eraser. You can create a game world by yourself or take some favorite game or book as a base. You can draw your own map, your cities, create your own non-player characters, your own pantheon, world history, laws and judicial system, economy and form of government. Add new races, ban the use of magic, allow gay marriage, make a revolution, and even build communism!
The game session begins with character creation. You choose the gender, race, worldview, appearance and character of your hero. So who will it be? A cursed knight, trapped in the body of an 18-year-old boy and having lost all of his abilities; a priest of the death god who eats corpses for some dark ritual; a paladin who destroys all evil around him; an urban pickpocket who dreams of becoming the head of a thieves’ guild; a 2 meter tall town fool who can kill a bull with one punch; Yes, by anyone – it’s up to you. The creation process itself can take several hours. True, it should be noted that not everyone can or wants to play for a weak hero, not everyone can cope with high intelligence, and only a few can regain charisma, but this is the highlight of RPGs.
The game itself consists of a host (Dungeon Master, henceforth simply DM), who is responsible for the entire game world, the creatures that inhabit it, is a narrator and scriptwriter; and players who only play the roles of their characters. It usually starts with the introduction of the player characters, let’s say there are three of them and they have created such personalities: Crach, a sullen and angry dwarf warrior; Zan is a mentally disturbed bard who performs at a local tavern; Horus is a priest of the god of order and a member of the local police.
The introduction of the characters is something like this
DM: Hot summer evening, it’s around 7pm now.
Crash: “I walk into a tavern, take a good look at everyone, and order a drink.”
DM: “Remember how Crash sometimes loses control of himself to alcohol?”
Crash: “Have the first cup and ask for more.”
Zan: “And now I’m playing the lute like Jimi Hendrix!”
DM: “No one in this world knows who Jimi Hendrix is, but that’s fine, you’re just playing your usual repertoire.”
Zan: “I’m playing with my teeth!”
DM: “Okay, I understand you.”
Crash: “I’m still drinking… Oh, I don’t like the local bard.”
DM: “Crash must make a Toughness and Wisdom check.”
Shock: “Easy!” (At this point roll the dice)
DM: “Crash is still on his feet, but he’s completely out of control.”
Crash: “Go around the table and throw the cup at that nasty bard.”
DM: “You missed, instead of a bard, you hit a fairly large man sitting by the stage. He gets up from the table and three other people are with him.”
Zan: “Ha ha mozillaaa!” – “With these words I hit the lute of the peasant who was hit by the cup.”
DM: “There’s a big fight going on… are you sure you want to stage this?”
Horus: “At this time, I enter the tavern accompanied by the city guard.” “By law, everyone is under arrest!” DM: “The next day you…”
This is a small example how’s the game session going. Further adventures took the trio to an old abandoned castle, where Zan lost his humanity by touching a mysterious mirror, Crach furiously battered the local gargoyles with his shield, and Horus smeared arrows with poison all the time (the person playing for him just shied away). she fell asleep) . Having gained experience, our heroes attacked the local orc camp, then Crash made his favorite necklace out of his ears, and Zan sewed a meat golem out of his leftovers. The golem was always under an invisibility spell, but it stank terribly. Horus periodically participated in the torture of heretics, from which even Crach fell ill. They had fun and exciting adventures.
The plot is written by the players themselves in real time. “Failed rolls” of the dice do not lead to defeat, there is no Game Over inscription on a black background. Missing or failing a saving throw is sometimes a lot more fun than taking down hordes of monsters. A good presenter will not only kill the player characters, but will try to take the opportunity to get out of a sticky situation. After all, the main thing is to have a good time in good company, and not go to the next level (although it’s like any other). The entire game session is limited only by your imagination, and the rules serve only as an assistant.
After the gaming sessions, very clear memories remain. You begin to care about your character, you think about the development and subsequent actions of him. The speech is full of game terms and jargon. Watching some Lord of the Rings or other fantasy feels like a gaming session, with each character assigned a class and alignment.
