The study also highlights that droughts are not always noticed until they affect agriculture or forests, but their effects on ecosystems can be widespread. In particular, the study revealed previously undetected droughts, such as the drought in the Congo rainforest between 2010 and 2018.
Results vary by region. While temperate forests are hard hit, tropical and boreal forests are more resilient but still face long-term risks.
Scientists stated that current strategies mostly focus on short-term droughts, and future mega droughts will be “much longer and more severe”, and emphasized the need to be prepared for droughts.
