This was stated by the head of the social network in a new video published on the platform on Saturday, one day before the blocking of TikTok in the United States.

According to Mosseri, the limit was increased in response to user complaints that 90 seconds was “too short.”

The head of the social network also added that the Reels section will have a With Friends feed, made up of videos with which the user’s friends interacted.

In the new feed, you will be able to “start chatting” with friends who have tagged in it. For now, the Reels With Friends feature is available in the United States.

“We want Instagram to be not just a place where you consume entertaining content, but also a place where you connect with friends through that content,” Mosseri said.

The Chinese short video platform TikTok, which competes with Instagram Reels, has allowed the publication of three-minute videos in 2021.

On January 19, TikTok stopped operating in the United States due to the entry into force of a federal law that prohibits the social network.

Instagram tested increasing the Reels limit to ten minutes in summer 2023, but the company has so far refrained from introducing the feature, leaving the ability to post long videos for non-Reels posts.
