The study was conducted among 11th grade students who were not educated in STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) but were required to study biology. The students were divided into two groups: one using traditional materials and the other using lessons with added memes. Over the course of five weeks, students explored complex topics such as cell division and genetics. Lessons included assignments to create your own memes about the material.
The results showed that the group that learned the meme performed 21% better on posttests compared to the control group. On average, they received 21.46 correct answers while other participants received 17.74 correct answers. Additionally, students who learned biology through memes showed more positive attitudes towards the subject and increased confidence in their abilities.
Memes help make complex science concepts more accessible and memorable and reduce anxiety around learning.
