There is little evidence for the health benefits of cold therapy. Experts warn that for some people, cold water shock can do more harm than good. Sudden immersion in water below 15 degrees Celsius can kill a person in less than a minute.

Immersion of the body in cold water causes a sharp increase in breathing, heart rate. After a few minutes in these conditions, heat loss begins to cause other problems. Blood rushes from the limbs to the center of the body to protect vital organs. This deprives the arms and legs of good circulation, which can lead to loss of strength and coordination. Diving this way is especially dangerous for people with heart problems.
