Apple’s surprise move with the A16 chip in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro continues to reveal more. Let’s just remember that the Pro model has the latest chip. But all is not as it seems. It is an improvement of the already existing technology called N5. There is tangible evidence on the numbers: it has 2 high-performance cores, 4 efficient cores, 5 GPU cores and 16 Neural Engine cores in two chips. The strongest difference might be that transistors go from 15 billion to 16 billion.

Architecture almost identical with some performance improvements

Another difference between both chips is the clock speed.Apple does this higher on the A16 chip, but that’s just a 7% increase. The architecture is the same except that the RAM memory has changed from LPDDR4x to LPDDR5. Looking at Geekbench figures, CPU performance increased between 8% and 10%.

iPhone 13’s A15 Bionic processor

There is a 7% to 19% improvement in GPU, but affected by the mentioned clock speed increase. The bandwidth on the memory is 50%. Replaced parts were “few” and not total change of chip. For these reasons, the iPhone 14 shares some of the camera features that the iPhone 14 Pro also has.
