According to one of the interlocutors of the publication, we are talking about the debt accumulated by Google before January 15 for not meeting the requirements to restore the accounts of TV channels on YouTube. At the same time, the amount of debt already exceeds global GDP, so the parties will have to look for another way to solve the dispute, says RBC.
In October 2024, the publication reported that the total amount of the requirements of 17 Russian television channels for Google reached 2 undecillion Rivles (unit with 36 zeros). In a judicial hearing on October 28, the judge indicated that a “case in which many, many zeros” is being considered.
The test began in 2020, when YouTube blocked the accounts of the television channels “Tsargra” and “Ria Fan”. In 2021, the Russian court ordered Google to restore access, but the company did not meet the requirement. As a result, fines of 100,000 rubles per day accumulate. The amount of the fine is doubled every week and has no restriction.
In 2022, the platform also limited access to Sputnik, NTV, Russia 24, RT, Channels of the Regional Branches of VGTRK and others. Then, the Federal Antitrust Service acknowledged that YouTube abuses the dominant position. As a result of Google, a fine was assigned, which then increased to 4 billion rubles.
In June 2022, the Russian daughter of Google-Gogle LLC sent a bankruptcy statement due to debts that reached 19 billion rubles. In October 2023, the Moscow Arbitration Court recognized the company’s bankruptcy.
The Russian media also filed demands in the courts of Türkiye, Hungary, Spain and South Africa to achieve Russian decisions against Google abroad. The Moneyweb portal in June 2024 reported that the court in South Africa arrested Google assets in the country due to the lack of compliance with the Moscow court decision on the restoration of accounts on YouTube.
In August 2024, Google filed demands against the United States and Great Britain against the owners of the Russ, Tsargrad and Savior television channels, trying to prohibit them from starting claims outside Russia. On January 22, the Court of England supported the demand of the American company. However, Russian legislation “does not provide for automatic recognition or the execution of foreign court decisions, including English,” RBC recalled, an advisor to the Pen & Paper Faculty.
