A team of experts found that people with migraine diagnosis, tension headache, traumatic headache and trigeminal autonomous cephalgia had a higher risk of suicide.

As part of a new study published in Jama neurology, experts examined the Danish citizens of 15 years and older. Between 1995-2020, a headache was first diagnosed. Information about their health was compared with 5 to 1 ratio with people who did not diagnose headaches.

In total, 119,486 people with headaches and 597,430 selected control were included in the study. This diagnosis of migraine, tension headache, post -trauma headache and trigeminal autonomous cephalgia include this diagnosis.

In people with headaches, the absolute risk of suicide attempts over 15 years reached 0.78% compared to 0.33% in the control group. The difference in risks was 0.45%.

Migraine showed the corrected risk rate (HR) 1.71 to try suicide and 1.09 for completed suicide. With stress headaches, this ratio is 1.91 for suicide attempts and 1.44 for completed suicides, with trigeminal autonomous cephalgia with 3.14 and 3.22, respectively – with 1.97 and 2.40.

In addition, people suffering from headaches had higher indicators of relevant medical and psychiatric diseases. Cancer, cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, traumatic brain damage, mood disorders, disorders associated with the use of psychoactive substances.
