At the same time, the number of purchases in the books increased by 7%, and the average control was 22%, up to 421 rubles. The Russians buy educational literature, works of art, as well as popular scientific publications, magazines and calendars in bookstores, analysts said.

Women turned out to be the most active buyers, ascending to 73% of the total. At the same time, the average check in men and women is almost the same, added to the “mail bank”.

The analysts explained the growth of expenses in books for the desire of the Russians to increase their intellectual level and instill readers’ skills for children. Traditionally, women for family reading are made by women who also acquire textbooks and manuals for school and extracurricular activities, according to the study.

At the beginning of February, the largest editorial group EKSMO-AAST in Russia informed RBC about printing shortage for the decoration of books. In early 2025, the deficit amounted to 30% of the market needs.

The deficit touched the colors, varnishes and other components to create bright and unusual covers, cuts and colored exits. Especially scarcity affected selective varnishing and template printing, which are used to achieve clear contours and high quality images, said Eksmo-Ast.
