Gabbard indicated that this requirement is “a clear and atrocious violation of confidentiality and civil freedoms of Americans.” The letter also indicates that US National Security Lawyers are working on a legal conclusion on the consequences of such a requirement.
The National Intelligence Director also recalled the existence of a bilateral agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom to explain the legal use of data abroad (cloud law). It prohibits the United Kingdom to demand the provision of data on residents of the United States or any person located in the country. A similar measure acts in relation to the authorities of the United States.

- After that, Apple disabled the “expanded data protection” function for British ICloud.
