The North Ice Hat, which has a width of approximately 1,000 kilometers and has a thickness of 3 kilometers, forces the surface below to sink at a very low speed – about 0.13 millimeters per year. This shows that Mars’ upper coat is much colder and harder than Earth, which means that the interior of the planet has cooled for a long time.
According to scientists, an ice hat formed 2 to 12 million years ago, which made it one of the largest scale objects on Mars. Surprisingly, although the North Pole is cold, volcanic activity can continue in the equatorial region.
