Propylene is widely used to create plastic, packaging and chemical products, but its production is often associated with large carbon emissions. The new catalyst operates almost at room temperature, which reduces energy consumption. It consists of copper atoms fixed on a special substrate that increases their activities. Under the influence of light, the catalyst wash the propane molecules and adds water to produce propylene with minimal products.

According to the leading researcher Van E, this single metal atoms is the first time in a similar reaction to show such an activity. The technology is still under laboratory tests, but it already attracts the attention of the industry.
