This Tuesday (11) kicked off Google I/O, an annual conference held by big tech to announce news of the brand. With live online streaming between today and tomorrow (11), employees, fans and developers using Google services will be able to keep up with all the announcements.

One of the most anticipated topics of the public is security news.

Security Announcements at Google I/O 2022

Among the news published by the company is the Google Threat Analysis Group (TAG). Founded by cyberattack experts, the group tracks alleged Russian hacking threats to aid Ukraine during the war.

In addition, Project Shield, Google’s free service that protects news, human rights, and election-tracking websites, has been expanded to protect more than 200 Ukrainian government pages.

In addition to its wartime initiatives, the company also highlighted changes aimed at the general public:

  • Virtual cards: One of the main innovations is the virtual card in Chrome and Android. When completing a purchase, users will be able to use Google’s autofill feature to complete information, but the actual card number used for the purchase will be replaced with another number.
  • Account security status: Users will be informed about the security status of the applications installed on their mobile phones. A yellow alert icon will now appear next to your Google Account profile picture. The signal notifies the user of actions to take to secure the account.
  • Search Results: In the coming months, a new tool that will allow users to check their personal information (address, contact number, email, etc.) will be available for public Google searches.
  • Advertising center: By the end of 2022, the company is expected to launch a new “ad hub” where users can check out the brands or types of services they’d like to see more or less of in ads on Google Search, YouTube and Discover. It will also be possible to block ads and report them.
  • Two-step automatic verification: According to the company, expanding two-step verification of passwords for Google Accounts was one of the main initiatives last year, and now the expectation is to reduce the “bureaucracy” of the method. The goal is to reduce cases of phishing.
