Durov was arrested in August 2024 in France. Later, he was accused of the complexity of illegal activities on the telegraph platform.
Recently, he wanted to go to the United States to negotiate with investors, but the French authorities saw it as a bad reason to abandon it. Previously, in March 2025, he was already allowed to go to the UAE, where he was a citizenship.
This was against the background of an international scandal: Durov said in the spring of 2025 Nicolas Lerner, President of the French External Intelligence (DGSE), said that he wanted the Romanian conservatives in Romania to block the channels of Telegram. Durov refused to fulfill this request, stressed that Telegram did not limit the freedom of speech and did not prevent political channels at the request of the authorities even in Europe. Durov said he was ready to come to Romania and to testify in the Constitutional Court in this case.
The French authorities rejected Durov’s accusations and said to them fake. DGSE really confirmed that they had contacted with Durov.
