The dust storm began on May 16 in the northern part of Illinois and moved to the east from Chicago and north of Indiana. After the storms in the center of Illinois, it was caused by strong winds by lifting dust from dry fields. The wind reached a speed of more than 97 km/h and created an intense dusty curtain.
For large lakes area, such storms are rare and for Chicago – even more. For the last time in 1985, a strong dust storm was here, but much weaker. According to the US National Weather Service, a similar activity in Chicago did not take place for almost 100 years due to the 1930s.
