Researchers found that mitochondria – “Energy stations of the cells“ – not only did it stock up more calcium, but also made it in a special way: in the form of mineral granules. However, they do not lose important energy molecules – ATP and ADF. Previously, scientists thought that calcium accumulated differently, but old experiments may be wrong because they damaged mitochondria.
Russian experts performed experiments under more gentle conditions when mitochondria remained intact. This made it possible to understand how calcium accumulates and how cell energy is protected. New drugs that affect this process – a potential “target” for molecules were found.
