Short video creation platform TikTok has started testing the simultaneous translation feature in its content. Similar to YouTube, the technology automatically creates subtitles in your preferred language in real time as you watch.
As the new feature is still in its early stages, it won’t work on every video. TikTok’s plan is to enable the feature on more videos in the next few months. In addition to Portuguese, translation is already enabled for English, German, Indonesian, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish and Turkish.
TikTok’s advice points out that translation is not limited to verbal content. Users of the app will be able to see translated captions and descriptions of the video, and sometimes even text tags used on top of the content.
As of 2021, TikTok already has a tool for creators to manually add captions to their videos. The idea of simultaneous translation is to make it possible to make even more content available in different languages more easily and quickly. Now is the time to test the quality of machine translations.
