OpenAI has insured its risks through Aon, but the amount of coverage varies, according to various estimates, to well less than $300 million. Experts say even maximum insurance coverage isn’t enough to cover potential billions of dollars in claims.
Aon spokesman Kevin Kalinich confirmed that the insurance industry as a whole does not have sufficient capacity to cover the risks of AI model developers. In this context, OpenAI is exploring the option of creating its own insurance structure to manage emerging risks.
Last month, a federal court in California tentatively approved a $1.5 billion settlement in the authors’ class-action lawsuit against Anthropic. According to sources, the company is partly using its own funds to cover possible fines.
