Beijing emphasized that the American side’s statements were an example of double standards. Chinese officials believe that constant threats of high tariffs are not the best way to conduct dialogue between the world’s two largest economies.

A day earlier, Trump said the United States would double tariffs on Chinese goods starting on or before November 1. He said Beijing took an “extremely aggressive stance” on trade issues. The country’s president has previously stated that there is no longer any point in a personal meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the APEC summit.
