A Reddit user reported that when played via the CrossOver emulator, even at minimum graphics settings the frame rate barely reached 10fps during battle scenes and only 20fps indoors.
Borderlands 4 has become the most technologically advanced part of the series and places extremely high demands on the hardware. In testing, even the RTX 5090 can’t always manage a steady 60 frames at 4K, so it’s no surprise that the ultra-thin MacBook Air can’t handle it.
The situation is aggravated by the lack of active cooling. The Air uses only a passive heatsink, which causes the M4 chip to quickly overheat and reduce frequencies. This causes throttling and further degradation of performance.
But other modern games run reliably on the MacBook Air M4 via CrossOver. Experts believe that the problem in Borderlands 4 is related not only to the hardware, but also to the rough optimization of the game itself, and the developers will probably improve it in future patches.
