Scientists estimate that adult hyenas can weigh up to 400 kg. They fed on large herbivores, including hornless rhinos, ancient hipparion “horses”, deer, giraffes, and antelopes. For a million years, “terrible” hyenas were more dangerous than saber-toothed tigers and other cats.
The structure of the teeth and jaws shows that hyenas are capable of inflicting powerful bites and breaking bones. It is not yet known whether they hunt alone or in groups.
Anatomically, Dinocrocuta gigantea was similar to modern hyenas but was not their ancestor; The similarity arose as a result of convergent evolution.
In the future, researchers plan to study hyena remains in Russia.
