The program will use both national and commercial satellites to protect “space assets and services.” According to the recently published 2030 EU defense roadmap, the project will require billions of euros and several years to implement. European leaders must formally approve the initiative by the end of this year.
Space Shield is designed to protect satellites from threats such as signal jamming, data tampering, and “potential operations in space.” The program is planned to be launched in the second quarter of 2026.
In addition, the EU is developing its own space systems: the Galileo geographic navigation network, the Copernicus observation system and the IRIS² project, a Starlink communications alternative that will be fully operational in the 2030s.
The European Commission plans to allocate 131 billion euros to defense and space as part of the new multi-annual financial plan for 2028-2034.
