Strava escalated the controversy by posting criticism of Garmin’s API guidelines on Reddit on October 2. The post claimed that Garmin required its logo to appear on every event post; Strava said this showed it was prioritizing marketing over user experience.

The quick resolution was likely the result of closed discussions and Garmin’s strong patent protection. DC Rainmaker states that Strava’s patent rights on heat maps are not strong enough. Strava’s business relies heavily on Garmin data, and the conflict could negatively impact the company’s IPO plans.
