The characteristics of Asian structures have been formed by the effect of the geographical position of the countries. Scientists found the first mention of curved roofs 4,000 years ago. In those days, most of the Chinese lived in coastal areas – near the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. In certain months, the population suffered from tropical rainstorms that could last for several weeks. Therefore, residents of China came up with such an unusual roof design. Thanks to this solution, it is possible to reduce the amount of water falling on the frames of temples and houses.

In addition, the roofs are also fixed in a special way. A special post-and-beam structure (see pictures above) called “dou gong” was used for this. Such supports can reduce the impact of large amounts of precipitation on the building and make the structure more stable overall.

Another reason to turn to such a design is the sensitivity of Asian countries to earthquakes. According to the author of the article, such a design helps to reduce the strength of earthquakes.
