Skoltech and the Radio Research Institute are preparing a project to develop sixth-generation 6G communications equipment. To do this, they asked for 30 billion rubles. The team can be created by 2025.

Russia plans to develop 6G immediately

At the same time, commercial 5G networks have not been launched in Russia, operators believe that in today’s realities it is worth supporting the 4G standard, which is enough for subscribers for now, Kommersant reported.

The director of the Radio Research Institute, Oleg Ivanov, pointed out that the project plans to develop equipment from prototypes to production, develop the component base, prepare the regulatory framework and study the electromagnetic safety of the new networks. He did not disclose details or funding.

The 6G format is expected to operate in the 95 GHz to 3 THz range. However, as an interlocutor in the telecommunications market explained to the publication, the terahertz range has not yet been assigned for any task and “has not been studied either in terms of data transmission or in terms of human safety.”

In January, ER-Telecom, Rostec and AVK Investments became shareholders of the Moscow telecom operator Akado and will create a platform for the development of technologies on its basis, including 5G, the Internet of Things and data centers. Negotiations over the sale of Akado have been going on for more than 10 years.

In 2021, the Rostec State Corporation established a specialized company, Spektr, which should become a “national provider” of national 4G, 5G and 6G networks. Around the company it is planned to deploy “technical and industrial cooperation” of Russian manufacturers of equipment for communication networks.
