Company metamaskOffering a virtual wallet for cryptocurrencies, it has confirmed that its customers are at times the target of scams that can result in huge financial losses.

According to website CoinTelegraph, an NFT collector reported a scam last Friday (15) that stole approximately $650,000 from his company account. He would not be the only victim of the scheme that took advantage of users’ carelessness and used an elaborate structure to steal access credentials.

The scam only involves Apple devices and customers who store MetaMask backup data, including access codes to virtual wallets, in their iCloud accounts.

According to the complaints, it all started with multiple SMS messages sent by criminals posing as Apple employees, asking you to reset your password for security reasons. A phone call is made by the scammers, still disguised as tech support, asking for the six-digit verification code that appears on the screen.

If you give this string to a third party, they can gain access to your account, change your password and exclude you from your profile, as well as access files and data in the cloud.

In the official note posted on Twitter, MetaMask recommends that customers with “not strong enough passwords” disable the automatic backup of their virtual wallet data to iCloud and beware of direct Apple connections via unconventional channels.
