Since ancient times, people have had different explanations for why there is so much salt in the ocean. Modern scientists believe it is a combination of several factors. This is salt runoff from rivers and hydrothermal springs.
Regarding the salt in the rivers, it should be said that, in fact, its chemical composition in rivers and seas is very different. River water is characterized by carbonates, while sea water is characterized by chlorides.
Scientists first began studying hydrothermal vents in 1979. This study was carried out under the RISE program. Experts have found that water from the ocean penetrates deep into the earth’s crust and is enriched with chemical compounds, including chlorides. This solution heats up to 350 degrees Celsius and sprays back into the ocean. This creates hydrothermal vents or black smokers (“black smokers”).
