A British court approved the activist’s extradition on Wednesday (20). Julian Assange to the United States, where he will be formally prosecuted. The decision was made by District Judge Paul Goldspring during a hearing.

Assange was present via videoconference as he has been detained in a facility where convicts are held since 2019 for threats to national security.

The case is currently in the hands of Home Secretary Priti Patel, who only has to approve the sentence. Another appeal to the activist’s lawyers was recently denied, but they will now have four weeks to present the documents and arguments and they can still take the case to the Supreme Court.

Assange is the founder of the WikiLeaks project, a digital platform that brings together classified documents that previously contained key information about military campaigns and controversial government actions – including details about Brazilian politicians.

He was first arrested in the UK in 2010, charged with sex crimes in an already closed case. The activist, currently under espionage charges, spent years at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London until he was arrested and had his citizenship revoked.

The team tried to delay or cancel the extradition in court for two years. If Assange is indeed sent to the United States, he will face 17 charges, including espionage and computer misuse. According to his lawyers, the penalty could be up to 175 years in prison.
