Inside for the first time Canada one will be brought it causes against the oil companies held primarily responsible for global warming. The initiative came from the City of Vancouver City Council under pressure from the Lawyers Association West Coast Environmental Law and from the countryside “Sue Big Oil” who have been fighting the oil giants for years.

The aim is to make them pay for the damage caused by the climate change. In particular, the damage done last year when they happened in several cities around the world over the summer accidents even fatal after the record temperatures reached.

Close to Vancouver, last year’s city Lytton was engulfed in flames, forcing the evacuation of more than 250,000 people. The fire was favored by temperatures reaching 50°C. Also today on the mountains fires continue to develop around the remains of the village.

So the Vancouver City Council voted to sue the major oil companies and awarded $660,000 to the lawsuit, or $1 per citizen. But the vote will have to be done again in the period of October when the new city council takes office, the debate opens and clashes over the issue again.

I am so pleased that the council has approved my motion. The goal is to make polluters pay for the cost of damage to cities. The City of Vancouver now spends $50 million annually to repair roads and infrastructure against extreme weather conditions.

Adriane Carr, Councilor
