The Canadian IMAX, which exited the Russian market on June 1, has banned the use of the format of the same name in Russia to show domestic films. It is reported by RBC with reference to Alexei Vasyasin, general director of the united cinema network Cinema Park and Formula Kino.
According to him, national distributors own the equipment to show movies in IMAX format, but permission from the company is required to show movies in that format.
“Technically, a projector can show any movie. Another problem is that it is impossible to show a movie in IMAX format without permission from IMAX. Even Russian films in this format – “Movement Up”, “Stalingrad” – now, unfortunately, we cannot show them, because there is a direct ban on the company’s use of the format, ”said Vasyasin.
Vasyasin believes that IMAX, which closed the Russian office, will return “as soon as possible”, while the Russian side will review the terms to exclude the possibility of a unilateral withdrawal in the future.
IMAX (short for Image Maximum – “maximum image”) is a special film format that allows you to make the image brighter and clearer, create an immersive effect for viewers due to the larger scale and screen length space that exceeds a person’s field of vision. IMAX technology was patented by the Canadian company of the same name.
