Since 2023 Tesla will have to find another way to name its fully autonomous driving software. (Full self drivingor FSD in English). At least in California. The fact is that the US west coast state passed a law prohibiting automakers and dealerships from selling cars with semi-automatic driving systems, but promoting themselves as fully autonomous.
While Tesla’s fully autonomous driving technology has been developed to make its cars fully autonomous, it’s still a long way off. It is true that it has changed a lot in recent years, but is still in beta. And those who tested it at depth assure that not yet reliable enough without the need for any human intervention.
Regarding the new California regulation, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed state law 1398 last week. It was supported by Senator Lena Gonzalez, who chairs the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Senate Transportation Committee.
The legislation targets Tesla and its fully autonomous driving technology, which has been controversial on numerous occasions. In fact, Elon Musk’s company has been one of the main opponents of the legislation, claiming that they already warn users about FSD restrictions.
State Law 1398 recommends that no manufacturer or dealer sell vehicles with partially automated driving systems without explicitly stating on their behalf how they work and what are its limitations. It also mentions that such technologies should not be described in marketing materials in such a way that buyers think that vehicles are completely autonomous. Failure to follow these instructions will be considered as “misleading advertising”indicates text.
