Windows Explorer (finally) gets tabs. In a blog post, Microsoft has officially announced the new functionality for Windows 11.

Tabs in Windows Explorer is a feature that has been discussed since the introduction of tabs in the browser. Many other developers like Stardock’s Groupy or Explorer++ were ahead of Microsoft by bringing tabs to an explorer. Originally Microsoft would have already added tabs to Windows 10’s explorer, but for unclear reasons this never happened.

In a recent Windows 11 Insider Build preview, tabs suddenly appeared. Now they have been officially announced by Microsoft in a blog post.

Multiple explorer windows

Tabs in Explorer are very reminiscent of tabs in a browser. It makes working with multiple explorer windows much clearer because you can see everything in one explorer window. Microsoft also claims that the files you need appear sooner, thanks to smart algorithms. Through a new search function and preference for files shared in the cloud where collaboration takes place.

Explorer tabs aren’t the only add-on Microsoft has announced. There will be an automatic captioning feature for video and integration with Windows 365. Cloud subscription version of Windows.

Windows Insiders can already start with tabs in explorer. It is not yet known when the functionality will be available for all Windows 11 users via Windows Update.
