In a recent study, scientists learned how aerobic exercise and yoga affect people’s drinking. The FitForChange study included 140 adults with alcohol use disorder who had never sought treatment.

Volunteers had to do yoga or aerobic exercise three times a week for 12 weeks. In the end, it turned out that both types of physical activity were equally effective in reducing alcoholic beverage consumption.

Overall, alcohol consumption decreased approximately equally for everyone. But those who took the yoga classes had the best results: they started drinking 6.9 standard drinks per week.

Experts have also found that certain aerobic exercises can not only reduce cravings for alcohol, but also reduce anxiety, as well as improve mood. What’s more, the same effect occurred in those who did yoga (they showed fewer signs of depression) and were even more pronounced.
