Netflix kicks off the pressure against the share passwords To share the account with anyone other than their own household, users will soon have to pay for one extra fee
The platform made the news last month, but at the time it was a test limited to a few specific countries. The new policy against random password sharing will soon be applied worldwide, including in Italy. A necessary choice, especially after the disastrous financial results for the first quarter of 2022 that were announced yesterday.
Netflix has lost more than 200,000 subscribers since last December and the company expects to lose another 2 million in the coming months. The company now plans to make some drastic changes to get it right. In addition to the tightness on password sharing, Netflix is also considering creating a new subscription plan that’s cheaper but backed by ad breaks – with a model similar to Netflix’s.
To share the account with other people, subscribers will soon need a extra of just under 3 euros (2.71 euros at the current exchange rate). The novelty is currently being tested in a number of specific countries.
When paying 3 euros, it becomes possible to share the subscription with a maximum of two other people. Each person can access the subscription with different credentials, so it is no longer necessary to have a shared email address and password.
Before taking the news globally, Netflix plans to conduct extensive testing for at least a year. Unless surprises, we’ll talk about it again in 2023.
