On account of SpaceX and operator T-Mobile, it was announced the connection to satellite communications in smartphones. Google announced today that support is expected in Android 14.

This was stated by Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google’s senior vice president of platforms and ecosystems. In his statement, he also recalled how “it was difficult to get 3G + Wi-Fi running” on the first Android phones (HTC Dream/T-Mobile G1) in 2008.

Lockheimer hinted that the “usable experience for phones connected to satellites” will be different from conventional LTE and 5G connections. It is expected that the connection speed and even the feel of the experience will be only – “2-4 Mbps bandwidth per cellular exposure.”

Elon Musk said that satellite communications could support “between 1 and 2 thousand simultaneous voice messages, or hundreds of thousands of text messages that can be sent depending on the receipt of a text message.”

Satellite communication on smartphones is primarily aimed at dangerous situations and getting rid of cellular dead zones. T-Mobile includes text messaging, MMS, and even “the ability to choose messaging apps.”

The carrier specifically added that restrictions on iPhone and Android devices would be respected, but the user experience is dependent on OS features. [9to5Google]
