A veterinary ophthalmologist explained that the amount of ambient light affects what a creature can see. Compared to humans, cats are much better at seeing objects when there is little light. So animals don’t see in absolute darkness, they at least need some kind of lighting. Cats see “six to eight times better” than humans at low light levels.
Cat eyes have evolved this way because they are predators. And most of its victims are active in the evening. In addition, cats have very keen hearing and sense of smell, which helps them navigate in space.
