Intel’s new Alder Lake processors for laptops are less efficient than the previous Tiger Lake series. NotebookCheck concludes that Lenovo is relying on the battery life specified in the specifications of its upcoming laptops. The Alder Lake series is known for its new core structure, which consists of performance and efficiency cores that should provide longer battery life.

NotebookCheck mentions the Thinkpad X13 G3 with Alder Lake CPU as an example. This new laptop from Lenovo has a battery life of 11.8 hours in the MobileMark 2018 test. Its predecessor, the Thinkpad X13 G2, with a Tiger Lake processor (but otherwise identical) clocked in at 14.5 hours here. The Thinkpad X1 Nano G2 doesn’t last as long as the G1 (11 vs 13.6 hours), just like the Thinkpad X1 Carbon G10 (16.7 hours versus the G9’s 15).

We’ll have to wait for reviews before we see how big the difference really is, but if that’s disappointing, that’s not good news for Intel. The next line of CPUs, Raptor Lake, was built in the same way as Alder Lake, so it wasn’t expected to perform much better in terms of efficiency.
